A fortune come true...

I was going through an old wallet recently and came across a fortune cookie slip that I have carried with me for years.  If I remember correctly, I received this fortune during a mother/daughter lunch a few years ago.  Actually, I was in high school, so when I say few, I mean 7 or 8 years ago.  Ok, now I feel old.  High school does not seem like it was that long ago.

The fortune says: You will step on the soil of many countries.

It is crazy to think that I held on to this specific fortune.  Ryan and I have been very fortunate to "step" on the soil of so many countries.  It is also crazier, to think that I got my first passport less than a year ago.  Since then I have travelled to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Russia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates (Dubai), Scotland (UK), England (UK), and in less than a month I will be stepping on the beautiful soil of Greece!

Ryan and I wanted to travel somewhere to celebrate our first anniversary.  Ryan chose Greece and planned everything.  I know very little about where we are staying.  I know what islands we will be traveling to, but the rest remains a mystery.  I am excited about the mystery, but more importantly I am very excited to spend some away time with Ryan.  I am still in the States, until August 2nd, and I am really missing Ryan. :(

Safely arrived in the States...

and enjoying every minute! :)

Ryan did an amazing job of scheduling flights so that my trip back to the States was as easy as possible.  When I say easy, this includes 33+ hours of travel from the time I left my apartment in Novo (midnight, Monday, Chicago time) until I arrived in Chicago at 10 am Wednesday.  My trip consisted of 3 flights, Krasnodar-Moscow, Moscow-London, London-Chicago.  I had a 4 hour layover in Moscow and a 9 hour layover in London.  Ryan was great, and booked a hotel in London so I was able to sleep for a couple hours and shower.  But, regardless of how long it took, it was worth it when I stepped out of O'Hare to a beautiful summer day.

I have had numerous moments where I pause and enjoy the moment.  I left the States from Houston, March 7th, and I have not been back to my parent's, Michigan City, since last Thanksgiving.  I feel it is appropriate to share the moments I have enjoyed, when in the past I may have taken for granted.

*Driving.  It has been over 4 months since I have driven.  My parents are actually enjoying the "new" driver in me.  I am much more cautious with my driving and my inner rage has been greatly reduced.  I credit this change to the fact I am driving my mother's car, which is much larger than my previous car (miss Emma).  Also, since I am used to having a driver, I find I have the tendency to talk and forget to continue pushing on the gas peddle, luckily, I continue to remember to steer. :)  Oh well, my parents enjoy the lighter lead foot.

*Target.  I remember mentioning my displeasure of Russia's lack of Targets.  I happily saw a Target semi during our drive home from O'Hare and I made a shopping stop earlier this week.

*Shopping.  If Michigan City Lighthouse Mall has an economic boost during the month of July, it is most likely due to me.  Luckily and unfortunately, I have to limit my purchases so I do not have too much in my luggage.  I find myself buying just as much for Ryan as for myself.  :)

*Small town Indiana.  I used to complain about the people of Michigan City and small town life.  Now, I think it's so refreshing.  People are so nice.  Checking out at the store, people have a conversation with you.  Driving in my parent's subdivision, people smile and wave.  Passing homes in the early evening, everyone is sitting outside on their front porches and patios.

*Country music.  My roommates (Maire and Jenn) from Indy can affirm my appreciation for country music.  After living in Russia, where the only American music I hear is the latest pop songs, it is very nice to listen to country music.  I guess it just adds to my small town Indiana surroundings.  Ryan should be thankful he is not being subjected to the country music.

*Food.  I have missed a few food items, Kashi, vanilla yogurt, cottage cheese and baby carrots, to name a few.  It is also very nice to go to a grocery store and see such abundant displays of produce.  The amount of selection for every grocery item is also very pleasant.

I think that wraps up some of the major items.  I am enjoying time with family.  I look forward to spending time with some friends too.  Returning to the States has really reaffirmed my understanding of how fortunate Ryan and I are.  Ryan, at such an early time in his career, has an amazing opportunity with an incredible company.  Living in Russia provides Ryan and I with an opportunity to not only test our abilities to adapt, but to also grow closer as a couple.  Our travel experiences have taken us to so many incredible places, with more to come.  I am truly blessed and am so thankful for everything I have, and everything I have to come.

I went hiking?????

I am sure that all who know me well have probably either laughed or gasped in shock.  I, Virginia Lee Lang went hiking.  Ryan and I joined Ed, Kim and their children Kaitlin and Patrick.  Ed had recently hiked this area and wanted to show the rest of us.  I chose a hike friendly outfit, packed some snacks and water and put on my outdoor aka. old sneakers.  I was ready.

We travelled to an area known as 7 Winds.  The drivers let us out and we began our hike.  It really was not too bad. Kaitlin and Kim are impressive ladies, very comfortable in nature and very open to picking up bugs.  In the picture below, it is Kaitlin's hand the bug is resting upon, not mine!  We encountered a decent amount of mud, but thankfully, no wild animals.  Ryan and Patrick did their fair share of using weeds to brush against me.  I would jump and start flicking away the "bug" only to have them laugh at me.  I thought the weather was going to be warm, but luckily Ryan suggested I bring a jacket.  I am glad I listened, it was pretty windy on the mountain.  Unfortunately, the weather was pretty overcast so we didn't get the best views of the Black Sea or Novorossiysk, across the harbor.

I made sure to capture some evidence of my hiking.  Ryan is on a quest to finally get me to go camping.  You know, I am going to try my hardest to somehow distract him from this idea.  :)

Towards the end of the hike.  We..... I mean....I survived. :)

Ugh.  I had a difficult enough time taking a picture of the bug,
I couldn't imagine having it on my hand.

Evidence of the mud on my shoes.

So stinkin' cute. :)

Ryan had the camera ready during the muddy passes.  He was waiting to capture me falling.  Sadly for him, luckily for me, I remained on my feet.

A Russian Birthday

A big thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes!  I celebrated my 25th birthday Wednesday.  I enjoyed all the birthday wishes and all the cards I received from home.  The day was pretty much the same as always.  I went to the gym in the morning, they saw on the computer it was my birthday and decided to give me a gift.  They made me fresh orange juice at the juice bar and it was delicious.

I met Ryan at work for lunch.  After lunch I walked over to Sporaxis to have my nails done.  I came home to a surprise.  I went to sit on the balcony and read until Ryan came home.  When I sat down, I saw that I had my first chili peppers growing.  I was super excited and as always, Macy too. :)

Ryan made dinner reservations at Myshako, a winery just outside the city.  I really enjoyed dinner.  The restaurant is very different from the others in Novorossiysk.  It has a much more relaxing atmosphere and delicious food.  Not to mention, the plethora of wine selections always makes a dinner much more enjoyable.

So, all in all, my 25th birthday in Russia was a successful and good birthday. :)  Some people asked about any special Russian birthday traditions.  As far as I know, there are not any specific traditions.  I know one difference is paying on your birthday.  In the States, if you go out with friends on your birthday, the friends pay for the birthday person.  In Russia, if you invite friends out to celebrate your birthday, you pay.  Also, you provide the birthday cake or treats at work on your birthday.  Ryan bought a cake and took it to work for his birthday.  I guess it's like grade school, you bring the cupcakes and juice on your birthday. :)  I always enjoyed when student's had birthdays. :)

First two peppers!!

Macy was enjoying time on the balcony.
Her tail is blurry in the picture because it was wagging so quickly.

Dinner at Myshaka.
I wore the dress Ryan picked out in London.

Beautiful  birthday flowers.
I usually get fresh flowers once a week, but this week I got them twice!
