A Colossal Symbol...

Fifty thousand Roman spectators would cheer as their favorite gladiators faced off in bloody, to the death battles.

Gruesome details aside, the Colosseum is the colossal, iconic symbol of Rome.  Legend says that so long as the Colosseum shall stand, the city of Rome shall also stand.  Nearly 2,000 years later, the Colosseum remains the symbol of the Eternal City.

Our tour guide was to meet us outside the Colosseum.  As Ryan and I walked to the Colosseum, we knew it was going to be huge and impressive.  We knew what events had taken place there (we had recently reviewed/watched Gladiator), what we didn't realize was the overwhelming size.  Standing outside, in respect to the Colosseum, one feels tiny.  Upon entering the arena area, visitors can only try to imagine what it must have been like to be a Roman spectator, and visualize what they must have witnessed.  It is unfathomable to contemplate what must have run through the minds of the gladiators.

One of our favorite sights visited during our trip, the Colosseum stood up to its name.

After our overwhelming tour of the Colosseum (real name, Flavian Amphitheater) we ventured to Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum.  I will not ramble on with all the endless facts we learned during our tour, my mind was on pleasant history overload.

Don your Roman toga and sandals, trust your social class is high enough to grant a decent seat, and prepare to join the other 49,999 spectators, thankful you are not one of the gladiators that will enter the arena, stand in front of the emperor and shout:
"Hail, Caesar! We who are about to die salute you!"

Leaving the Roman Forum, we made our way across the Tiber River to the Trastevere neighborhood, grabbed a delicious lunch at a tiny restaurant, and sat a few minutes in one of Rome's oldest churches.

Not to interrupt our tradition, we walked, and walked, and walked, eventually making our way back to our hotel.  We were anticipating a very eventful, educational final evening to our stay in Rome.

I had scheduled a private wine tasting event, raise your glass, let the wine flow......

Ryan raising his daily cone of gelato.
Extra big smile on his face after finding his highly coveted "cookies" flavor.
